The Chanukah Menorah
The most important tradition associated with Chanukah is the kindling of the lights
on the Menorah (the Hanukkiya). On each of the eight nights of Chanukah, a candle
is lit to commemorate the rededication of the ancient temple in Jerusalem, when the last
remaining container of undefiled oil miraculously lasted for eight nights.
The ninth branch of the candlelabra is reserved for the shamash, the servant light,
which is lit first and used to kindle the other lights of the menorah. The shamash
is kept apart from the other candles.
