Do you know your grandmother's name and birth date? How about your
great-grandmother? Have some fun this summer finding out all about
your family. Then make your own family tree!
It's easy to do. Print out the family tree and the family tree leaves
(see below). Spend some time with your folks to learn everybody's
name and birthday. Then, write the names on the family tree leaves and
glue them onto the family tree. More instructions and suggestions are below.
Have fun!
Download the Tree
To download the tree picture, click on the tree download link. The
large tree picture will appear in your web browser. Make sure you have some
8 1/2 x 11 inch typing paper in your printer and that that printer is turned on.
Then just print out the picture.
Download the Leaves
Click the leaves download link and print out the leaves, just like you did
the tree picture above. Then, cut out the leaves. (Kids: Get
help with those scissors!)
Hand print the names of your family members onto the leaves, one leaf for each
person. Hand print their birthday under each name. Then glue the
leaves onto your family tree.
Put older family members at the top of the tree. The youngest family members
go at the bottom.

this problem in Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
Suggestion #1: Color the leaves green for a
summer family tree. For a fall family tree, color the leaves brown, yellow,
red and orange.
Suggestion #2: Don't forget to include your sisters and
brothers, aunts and uncles, and cousins.
Suggestion #3: See how far back in your family history
you can go. Talk to your grandparents and ask them about their parents and their
grandparents. You'll find out all about your "ancestors."
Suggestion #4: If you have a tape recorder, take it
with you when you talk to your family members. You might be able to record some
great family stories. Don't forget to label your tapes with the names of the
people you talk to and the date of your conversations with them.
Suggestion #5: Print out two trees. Make one
family tree for your mother's side of the family and a second family tree for your
father's side of the family. If you have step-parents, you can do those families, too!
Some people have so much fun making their family tree that they spend lots and lots of
time working on them. There are groups, clubs and organizations devoted to
making family trees. They're usually called genealogy societies.
Do you have a big family? The family tree here might not be big enough!
Whether you make a very small family tree with just your folks, sisters and brothers,
or a very big family tree going back many years, learning about your family is fun!
