Preparation
French toast was invented many years ago as a way
to use up stale bread. Today, we often select
special bread to make this sweet breakfast treat.
It's simple enough for children to make and
sophisticated enough for a special occasion. Two
slices will be enough for most people, while hearty
eaters may want an extra slice or two.
Combine the eggs, milk, vanilla, and salt in a
medium-size bowl and mix together with a whisk.
Set aside.
Heat 1 tablespoon of butter on a griddle or in a large
nonstick saute pan over medium heat. Dip the bread,
one slice at a time, into the egg mixture until well
coated, and place it on the griddle. Cook the French
toast for about a minute on each side or until golden
brown. Repeat until all of the slices are toasted.
If you're cooking the French toast in batches, place
the finished pieces in an oven at the lowest heat setting to stay warm.
