The Chanukah Menorah
The menorah also celebrates the triumph of freedom over persecution, recalling the
Maccabees' struggle against the Syrians and the Greeks. Although weaker and
outnumbered, the Maccabees emerged victorious from the battle. The Maccabees
won the battle and were able to hold on for a while but eventually they succumbed
to conquest 80 years later.
The first Chanukah candle is lit at sunset on the first night of Chanukah. Each
night lighting of the candles is accompanied by appropriate blessings.
